Hooking up surround sound?????

Im trying to hep my mother get her surround sound to work for her tv. Heres the deal. I got a big screen tv with a digital cable box, dvd unit, and a surround sound unit. Starting from scratch lets say, how can I get the surround sound unit to produce sound from the cable box. Surround sound does not have an hdmi imput. Any help would be appreciated.

For surround sound you need to hook-up digital sound from the cable box and dvd unit to the reciever. You can use either optical or digital depending on your reciever/cable box/dvd.

Then you have to setup your reciever so that when you hit tv it uses the digital input that you asigned to it. To setup that up you have to go to the setup menu on your reciever.

Okay, most receivers should have one monitor output. It would be red, yellow, white, and should say something like "mono out."

If your receiver doesn't have this, then it's most likely not made for complete home theater surround, and you will have to buy new one.

Secondly, there should be inputs on your receiver labeled "Video 1," "Video 2," "DVD," etc. Run one set of RCA wires (yellow, red, white) from the output on your cable box to the input labeled "Video 1" on your receiver. Then run another set from your DVD output to the input labeled "DVD," or "Video 2," on your receiver.

Third, run another set of wires from the "Monitor Out" on your receiver to input labeled "Video 1" on yur TV. This should do it.

Lastly, you can switch between sources on your receiver to view your cable or your DVD by selecting either Video 1 or DVD on the receiver. Next press the input or source button on your TV remote until it switches to "Video 1."

That should do it!

For a high definition picture, you can use RGB component cables for the video, in place of the yellow RCA cable.  However, you can still use the red and white RCA's for the audio.

Coax or optical cable for digital surround, RCA (red and white left and right, yellow for video) for normal stereo sound. The backs of the units have the outputs and inputs listed.

Jon V is correct. You will need to use the optical digital audio from the box or the coaxial digital audio (orange). Note that you will not get true surround sound from your TV. You need a surround sound system for true surround sound (5.1 for example).
