Horse and foal conformation?

At what age of a horse can you tell if they will have good conformation or not? Like in foals, since they are not as fully developed do you have to wait and see how they will grow and develope to be able to see how they will turn out?? and also foals that look like their legs/feet may be a little crooked, can trimming their feet the right way straighten out their legs?

  1. Usually you can tell the horse's conformation from when they are foals

trimming the feet may help to straighten out the legs but they will more than likely straighten out as the foal grows and develops.

  2. i would say within one month there little bodies start to fill out you will see what they are going to look like

  3. You can see good conformation at birth or sometimes when they finish unscrutching a few days after birth. Take a look at this filly http://ancanmorgans.com/Shelly.htm at the top of the page you see her at one week and two weeks. There is no doubt that this filly has amazing conformation.....

Usually a baby will grow into its legs and those slight odd angles will straighten out.

  4. In general, most horse's do not have absolutely perfect legs.

  5. yes a good farrier can help the horses legs, but you should consult a farrier about trimming the baby's hooves

  6. well you should be able to tell instantly if the horse has good conformation. if the legs are a little crooked then trimming the feet may be a good idea.. that helps alot actually ( well for us it did anyway ).. but you also need to consider having a vet come over to see if he has any suggestions.. maybe he could rap them for you. it may not be fixable.. but right now is the time to try and fix. below is a sight that should help you better understand confirmation

    good luck

  7. You can tell right away with conformation in  a horse. However if they have crooked legs, you want to have the vet wrap them to help them straighten as well as keep them in (a small run) to keep them from stressing any thing.

Here's a good website for hoof trimming foals:

  8. When a baby's born within a week you get an idea as to how the baby's going to look.  The more babies you're around the better you get at sorting it all out.

This last filly I have was born 4/25/08 and I drive the stallion owner crazy because I've known his (The stallion's) top line through 5 generations.  I look at the filly's head and say, I see her great granddam, I see her colouring and see her grandsire on her sire's side, her top line came from her great grand dam...Then she says "Don't you see ANYTHING of my stallion?"  I thought I said that didn't I?

Of course she did get her dam's apple tushy!  HeHeHe

BTW most babies don't have the straightest legs for at least a month, lots are born over at the knee but then it corrects as they get older and things straighten and they learn how to use those long beautiful legs of their's.
