  1. my horse is microchipped and it does not cause problems. if you have a good horse i would ge it microchipped or branded. if you think somebody would steal him, definately get him branded or microchipped. the only reason my horse is microchipped is because her grandmother held the track record at delta downs and mite still hold it, haven't checked in a while. we recencly got a new horse that we are probably gonna have microchipped because he has good bloodlines

  2. There are a couple brands of microchips available and the cost varies by both brand and the vet implanting them. You can get a microchip on line for as little as 12-15 each or you can have a vet implant it from one of his  stock fro as much as $50 or more ( depending on the vet)

Usually a vet should do it because of the location, the size of the needle and in many cases the need for local numbing or complete tranquilization of the horse.

Yes it is basically the same type of microchip as found in dogs.

Is it worth it? Well that depends. I've had several of my horses implanted as well as a couple of my dogs, and I've NEVER needed to refer back to the chips in any of them for any reason.

However if you live in an area more prone to natural disasters ( ie hurricanes or tornadoes, etc) then it might be a really recommendable. The only horses returned to owners after Katrina were microchipped horses.  So if you tend to have many natural disasters, it would probably be very worthwhile to be able to have your horses located later.

It is implanted on the crest of the horse, in the middle of the neck with an injection

P.S. On http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... you made a lot of statements that were wrong, if you read my post right under yours, like half of my answer explains corrections for your answer.

  4. I have heard that microchips can lead to cancer, but i am unsure.

In my opinion, i am not completely for them because they can not be seen and are only really effective when they are scanned. In slaughter houses [or when we had them in the US] they were supposed to scan the chip, however it would just be removed as if it was never there. The chip won't show up unless it is scanned.

I would go with freeze branding because anyone can see it and it is fairly painless. I have neither, but have been thinking about freeze branding.

    :)

  5. http://nonais.org   Read this before you chip, then DON'T.   There are other, better ways of ID-ing your animals.

  6. Horse microchipping is more dangerous than with dogs. I have heard that it can cause major problems. I wouldnt recommend it.
