How does adding Sodium Citrate remove calciuim ions from Milk??

  1. It does not "remove" them from the milk. The citrate, however will bond, or chelate, to calcium ions, form an insoluble solid, a precipitate. Such a mixture of citrate ions in milk will taste very sour and is not recommended as a drink. You wouldn't mix orange juice with milk would you? It would curdle as citrate bonds to calcium.

    There are lots of side reactions that would occur including aggregation of protein molecules from the milk.


  2. A stronger base (Sodium) will always displace a weaker base (Calcium).  Most Calcium salts are insoluble so they will fall out of solution

  3. ions react to the chemical compoun atoms and the effect neutrilizes them
