There are several sites in the human chromosome which are the same no matter which human being you take.  These conserved domains are either left overs of a viral infection many many moons ago, or are regions that have evolved and remained unchanged.  What they do when a DNA test is done is by using a small amount of DNA (buccal or cheek cells don't give you a whole bunch of DNA), we amplify the DNA using a process called PCR, which stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction, and by using these conserved domains, we can test to see if those sites are the same for the father and the child.

    If you want to know how they visualize the DNA, they take the DNA and run and place it into a gelatin and run a current through it.  This causes the DNA separate into pieces based on their size.  If the sizes match up then the father and the child must be related.
