I am planning on planting some asparagus plants in my vegetable garden next year and I was wondering how big the plants got. I have seen to plant them in rows 12 in apart and then 4 feet between the rows. I am only planting 1 row of them in the back of the bed and I was going to plant a row of Strawberry 3 ft in front of that. Is this enough room? thanks!

  1. Three feet will be a little tight but it will work, four feet would be better. It all depends on how much walking room you like to have between the rows.

As the asparagus row fills in, you'll find the majority of it will stay within 12" of the row center. They don't spread that much. The ferns you leave to grow out in the summer can reach heights of 5 feet, but they are not dense and shouldn't cause a shading problem.

The strawberries will spread quite a bit by making runners, but you can control the width of the bed by moving the runners in closer and anchoring them with a stone or a little soil to get them to root in place.

  2. there crowns grow slowly over a few years but will get to about 10 inches or so in a few years time, good idea to plant something in between until they use up there room.good luck
