You generally need a truck, most people will pay for firewood delivered and stacked.  After that you need a source of wood, national forests will give you permits to cut a small amount of firewood or you can find orchards that are cutting down trees or private landowners with dead timber.  I've always seen ads in those free weekly papers you could also try craigslist if that's popular in your area.
