Question:

How can i practice volleyball?

I play volleyball and I sometimes try to get my lazy sister to play outside with me so I can get a little practice in. It always takes so much begging and pleading to just get her to come outside, and when she finally comes out she stands around and kicks the ball instead of playing the right way. Then she just gives up and says its too hot and goes inside. I get frustrated all the time, but I don't know what else to do. My parents won't play they don't have time... I would play against the side of my house but its not brick and i don't want to damage it.... any ideas?

  1. i have the exact same problem.

practice ball control everyday and when u get really good at it you cant do it around the house (inside the house). just practice going; left, right, bump, set, head, knee. or in any pattern you want to. You can also set against the wall of ur house without damaging it. Also outside you can practices rolls in the yard or inside in a wide open space. Also ask any friends to come and play with.

  2. do you have any friends that possibly live near you & like volleyball?

  3. With a cheap practice volleyball (cheap because you wouldn't want to damage an expensive indoor volleyball outside) - you can use any outside hard wall, be it concrete or brick, etc.  Look for a wall nearby you can use.  What you can do, is to throw the ball up like as in a set, and to go forward and spike it.  You start with a bent elbow and straighten it for your spike, adding a curling of your wrist upon impact with the ball, this adds spin.  Do it with a set at the proper height, and when you can naturally do it - spike perfectly.  Then vary your sets for the various sets you may get, and add a few for your other hand, so that you can also spike left-handed (or right, if you're a lefty?).  If you practice in an open public area (or do this, so as to get noticed?) - you may find that people may want to practice with you?  Or get some friends to help you out?  They can enjoy it too, once they are introduced to the basics, so that you can dig, set and spike at each other.  You don't need a net to do this.

It helps if the ball is soft with the correct air pressure.  You should be able to press your thumbs about 1/8th inch into the ball.  The store will adjust the air pressure to your requirements.  Having a soft volleyball, keeps your injuries down to the minimum.  There is no fun in playing with a rock hard volleyball, and to get injuries from using it - to your fingers, and bones, etc etc.

If your sister can see that it's way more fun, to do some regular volleyball moves -- maybe she'll want to learn how?  The more people you can practice with, it becomes less tiring (practicing with one other person - does get tiring fast) and much more fun - as you learn how to do all kinds of saves, and to keep the ball in play.

It is the basic ball handling skills that will help you a lot in volleyball - not only the standard dig, set and spike --- but to use what other methods work for chasing the ball, and bringing it back on court, etc.  These skills you can easily develop with practising with a small group of people - say 3-5 etc.  Anyone who's any good at volleyball, is because of the amount of practice they have had...

  4. Try to get one of your teammates to practice with you. If they won't, then that's their loss.

That tends to happen a lot to me so I practice ball control. Try these:

    1) Pass up and then touch the ground (repeat)

    2) Pass up and then clap three times (repeat)

    3) Pass up and clap, touch the ground (repeat)

    4) Pass up and turn around (repeat)

All these can be substituted with a set. Have you sister time you and see how long you can go without loosing control. This will definately help you with your game. Have fun!

  5. all i do is bump set then spike and chase the ball across my backyard and repeet.
