How come babies learn languages?

Because there is no pre-conceived notion of language and they absorb that which they hear. After about 8 years of age, the brain neurons have formed permanent connections and to learn a second language requires a different mental approach. Kids don't question "why have you taken my toy," for example; but older people will try to analyse the grammatical structure of the sentence.

Also, babies are surrounded by their native language; adults are spending an hour or two a day learning a new language.

Babies are exposed to the language. For example, if the parents and relatives speak a certain language, the baby will be able to catch the language too. This is what happened to me, so I became trilingual. English, Tagalog, and Chinese. However, if the babies don't get exposed to the language for a year, they'd lose the language.

Many linguists feel there's good evidence that the human brain is "wired for language."  Until puberty, we can learn several languages well, without an accent, if we're in a multi-lingual environment.  After puberty, the brain is no longer so flexible.  In fact, if a human doesn't learn a first language before puberty (in cases of child abuse, extreme isolation, etc.) it can be extremely difficult if not impossible to do so as an adult.  We need language to be fully human.

I had a human growth and development class and it said that childrens' brains are like sponges until the age of three or a little bit older.  Babies learn languages because they are exposed to them.
