How come my router wont work?

i have three computers hooked up to a router, the cable going from the wall to the modem, the ethernet cord going from the modem to the router, and everything is plugged in and in the right spot, i have tried turning it off and on again - it says "no local area connection" All of the computers work separately when i hook them up. any advice?

Start with everything turned off.  You should have straight through cables from the modem to the router and from the router to the computers.  Power up the modem and let it initialize completely.  Plug in the router and let it initialize completely.  Turn on the computer and let it come up completely.  Go to Start/Run and type in cmd.  In the box that opens type ipconfig.  It should show an IP address of 192.168.something.something.  If it does not, I would hold the reset button on the router for at least 10 seconds with a paperclip.  Do a power cycle and let it initialize.  on the computer type in ipconfig /renew.  If still not a good address, go into Control Panel/Networks and if Vista click on Manage network devices.  Make sure the device is enabled.  If active, right click select properties.  In the window that opens you should as a minimum have Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP4.  Double click the TCP line and make sure everything in both sections is set to automatic.  OK out and close everything.  Should be connected now.  Try the internet to see if it comes up.

There are many ways why this is happening? is this network exist and runs before? if it is a new network try to change your UTP cord or Path Cord from Router to Modem.. maybe it conflicts allot... there are 2 different Patch Cords.. Straight cable and Cross cable... try to use a Cross cable if your existing is Straight and vise versa... hope this will help you
