My son was born in Guatemala, and lives in the USA now. What could I invest in for him until he is older and could reap the benefits himself? Property? That's the only think I can think of... what do you all think?

  1. Your options are very limited.  One option that I am aware of that would allow you to invest in Guatemala, but which will not generate a monetary return is through Kiva.org which funds entrepreneurs in Guatemala among other developing countries.

If you are a very interprising individual,  you could go down to Guatemala and see if you might become a financial partner to some small business enterprise there.  I most likely do not have to remind you of the risks of taking such an action, but that is a possibility.  You might even consider buying a farm and going into shares with a farmer

Another possibility is to invest in a U S enterprise that has connections to the Guatemala economy.  For example funding a birding tour to Guatemala or backing a eco lodge in Guatemala.

Finally, you could invest in a company with Guatemala connections.  Chiquita is one CQB.  About 1/5 of its bananas come from Guatemala.  I can not say that I recommend this company.  It is not very well run. But it is an option.

  2. What a good mother, let me tell you here in guatemala we also have stock exchange, but I believe that is better you could invest in real estate, I would recommend that if you will invest in stocks you most do it in USA, because it is a very stable market and you know it already, in fact a lot of guatemala people invest his money in the stock exchange of USA.
