It could happen many ways.

1.  You never specified WHEN the man died, it could have been years later. Or he could have died in the car accident they might have had after leaving the bar while the other one lived.

2.  The man who died could have had a pre-existing condition and died coincidently then.

3.  The man who lived is immortal.
