He essentially originated "performance art" with his Exploding Plastic Inevitable events and even just his Superstars and the Factory scene. He was also one of the (if not THE) first, true "multimedia" artists as evidenced by his involvement in music, film, mass media (Interview Magazine), and his authorship of several books in addition to his varied and prolific painting career. He also managed to be an  international celebrity.  His embrace of commercialism and the consumer culture, which was despised and derided during his life, has proven to be extremely prescient. Like many artists he was far ahead of his time and his insights have proven themselves to be more and more true with the passing of time.
