I'll assume you are talking about the US.  The US came into being because we got upset with the British who were exacting all sorts of taxes on us and  then they sent soldiers here to spank us.  This made us even angrier and more alienated.  Then we persuaded the French to help us and the British, who had more pressing problems militarily decided to throw in the towel, much as we're going to do in Iraq.
