Hi - I'm based in the UK but have a new Amercian boss based in the USA. He seems to think that sending us links to his blog which heavily feature US games will motivate us.

Well, I'm willing to meet him halfway on this and learn about the game. (I want to make an genuine effort on this as well as impress him doing my day to day work.) Could you point in the direction of the basics - seasons, teams, gameplay that sort of thing.

Thanks in advance ;-)

  1. Simply play fantasy baseball on Yahoo! You already have an account so next year sign up for fantasy baseball and you will have lots to talk about when you learn about all the wonders of baseball stats. Don't worry yahoo fantasy baseball is easy to use and self-explanatory.

  2. Practise daily with your father or friends. Read more books about Baseball. Be cooperative with other players. Surf the web about Baseball. I hope that I can get 10 points for my answer.

  3. Keep watching the games and you'll get a basic understanding of it. Baseball isn't a hard sport to figure out. You may get confused about ground rule doubles, double switches and balks. But for the most part, it's pretty easy to catch on to.

  5. Watch Baseball Tonight on ESPN every night.(hopefully you get it) You can"t help but pick up on the basics plus all you really need to know is who is doing good and who is sucking. You can fake your way through a baseball conversation after awhile.

  6. just play and work at it a lot and ull be fine

  7. Visit mlb.com - it's the official site of major league baseball

the MLB is composed of the American and National Leagues.  There's a link to all the teams' sites on the home page and you can click to see them.  You can find full schedules on these sites, daily game results, standings/rankings, video, watch games live online, etc., join online communities and blogs, etc.  Find out which team your boss likes.  We have big American v. National league rivalries, and especially if two teams play in a city, i.e., Chicago Cubs (of the national league..and the best team.  Go Cubs!) and the Chicago White Sox (boo).

Training begins in the spring, usually in the warmer states like Arizona, California, Florida, etc.  All the teams meet at there designated locations and play there and practice to get ready for the upcoming season.  Minor league players (players training for the majors and already assigned to a team, i.e., the Clinton Lumberkings are one of the lower classes that play for the Texas Rangers) go to Spring Training as well.  Here, they see who may be moving up to a higher team, needs to move down, can now play for the majors, who they want to trade to other teams, etc.  Of course, major leaguers are there too.  They play games open to the public.  Spring training is late February to end of May.

The season starts usually end of May - depends on the team - and goes through October.  By late September to October, we have a pretty good idea for prospects for the World Series (championship games) during which the teams play in a series of games followed by the big one - the World Series.

There's a lot more to it.  Research the actual game to see how it's played.  It's the most complex game in history.  Lots of rules and very many things happening at once.  Your eyes are all over the place.

Best game there is!  And if I didn't make it clear, GO CUBS GO!
