Question:

How do I get into golf?

I really really reallyyyyy want to start playing golf. My high school has a girls golf team but when I talked to the Coach a couple days ago he said they already started and that if I can prove I'm better than these girl then I can join the team. But I KNOW I'm not better than them. The only golf I've been playing is miniature golf which is pretty sad. I always thought that when going for a school sport they have like two weeks of training before but I don't know about it in this case. I live in Central Florida if that helps but mostly all the places I kind of looked at are extremely expensive. I want lessons and to learn how to play it and make it something I'll dedicate my time too. I was thinking of just waiting until the end of the school year to see if they have a training at the school for next year but right now I think it would be great to get my skills together and try out for the team next year. Any places, tip, comments? Thank you.

  1. First off: You'll need a set of clubs. Since your a beginner, a used set will do just fine. Golf stores are everywhere, and they even have golf sets at Walmart! So that shouldn't be a very big deal. Then, you'll need all the necessities: gloves, balls, tees, a golf bag, and anything else you think you may need. Lessons are quite expensive. Since most good Pro teachers work at private country clubs, look around for public courses and see what type of lessons are available. Once you get a basis of the game, go from there. Buy whatever instructional books you can, and read them closely. In addition, buy a rules book. You'll definitely need to know all of the rules, even for high school golf. Practice at the driving range often, but don't forget short game. If you have any questions about the game or want more tips, you can feel free to email me. I'm a girl golfer so it might be easier for you to relate. Good luck! =)

P.S-You don't have to keep your head down. It has to do with how you swing. Everyone is different. Look at Annika: she lifts her head up. That says a lot, seeing as she is considered one of the best woman golfers.

  2. Getting started can really be expensive. Golf clubs, shoes, golf instructors, etc. If you're really dedicated to learning this sport, for starters, I would seek some advice from friends and/or family who already know how to play golf. Have somebody take you to the driving range and give you the basics of how to use all your golf clubs. My best advice, if you really want to be good at golf, is to get some lessons from a golf instructor although that can get pretty expensive. Good Luck!

  5. School team for next year sounds great. Maybe at this point of time don't be to worried about joining a golf club. Maybe start to get lessons every two weeks and really pay attention and work hard, if you are dedicated towards golf, it'll probably take you a good year to put everything together. Good Luck.

    Have a good one...

  6. You should buy an old, cheap set of used clubs to find out if you really have the aptitude for golf, and the desire to continue.

You can probably find a decent used set of irons for no more than $150.

If you do not have that kind of money right now, any driving range will let you rent a couple of clubs for just a couple dollars.

Go to a driving range and find out what kind of skill you have.  Then, if you really think you should continue, find a coach.  All good courses have teaching pros.

  7. First of all don't let anyone discourage you. Go to a local golf course and check with the pro on local golf instructors. Get some clubs and practice, practice, practice. If I could offer one piece of advice...keep your head down. Best of luck to you.
