How do I get started recycling?

Question

How do I keep a compost bin in my house without stinking up my place and attracting bugs? How can I find a recycling center near my home (Montgomery County, Tx), and can I recycle things like shaving cream cans that have metal and plastic and can not be cleaned on the inside?

I looked up the site for the county that you live in and I found that each precinct has their own recycling centers with different times.  Not sure if this is the site that you checked out.  It is the first link I posted.  It looks like within your county, these may be the only centers available.  

If these are the centers you said were far from your home, you may want to collect the recyclable items in plastic bags and  take them once every week, two weeks, etc.  By you doing this, you are helping out the environment, as well making others aware that maybe a recycling center should be placed closer to your home.  I'm not sure if you have neighborhood associations, but you may want to create awareness by talking with neighbors about it.  It will help by bringing it to the attention of higher authorities.

You may also want to check local grocery stores, since sometimes they have mini recycling centers usually by the parking lot areas (not sure how large the city you live in is).

Lastly, you can definitely recycle shaving cream cans, even though you may not be able to open them (just maks sure you have taken out/used up all you can).  I hope this info helps.

Keep looking online for recycling centers near you or start a compost pile with fruit peels and other biodegradable objects and topsoil in your yard. use the leftovers for fertilizer. Also you can see if your city has recycling trucks that come by like garbage trucks that will pick up your SORTED recyclables. Start soon and keep going.

Composting was too much of a bother for me untill I found vermiculture, which is a worm farm. It can be small, mine is in a corner of my kitchen and if you don't put meat into it and keep it covered with newspaper it won't smell or attract ants or other things, I put the link for a homemade bin like the one use.

take another trash can and go and use for JUST REC and also get a blue gardage can and leave it outside for rec

earth911.com has a local search feature for recycling centers. If that doesn't work call your local waste department that picks up your trash, they may have some ideas.

Composting shouldn't smell. If it does add some dry matter like sawdust, cornmeal, or shredded paper.  Using a worm bin also helps keep the smell and bugs under control. If you live in an area with raccoons or possums you may want to make sure they can't get in - they will spread the stuff.  I started with a Rubbermaid container with airholes drilled in and a handful of fish bait worms.

contact your local municipal office for info on recycling centres in your area and in turn they will tell you want they do and do not accept.As for a compost bin in the house you will attract fruit flies and other critters compost outside if you can in you don't have to many coons or possum around if not maybe in a shed using special red worms for composting (don't know were you could order them from)
