How would I go about graphing this problem:

x^2 y^2-2x 4y 1=0

I tried getting the y's to the right side, but it wasn't working out right. Please help me!

  1. There are some signs missing from the problem (this is a Yahoo! issue,  they delete plus signs in questions for some reason).  Can you rewrite it as a question detail?

  3. The graph is a circle.  You should put it in Standard Form first.

    Standard Form for a circle with center (a, b) and radius r

    (x-a)² + (y-b)² = r²

    is the equation of all points (x, y) with distance r from (a, b).

    (I am assuming the blanks in your equation are "plus")

    Convert General Form into Standard Form

    using "Completing the Square"

    x² + y² -2x +4y +1 = 0

    x² -2x +_____ + y² +4y  +____ = -1

    ... Find values for the ____ that make perfect squares (x-a)² and (y-b)²

    x² -2x + 1 + y² +4y  + 4 = -1 +1 +4

    (x - 1)² + (y + 2)² = 2²

    The equation is a circle with center (1, -2) and radius 2.
