Usually you get at least a Bachelor's degree in education, take tests to prove your knowledge in both your content area and in teaching (most states require the Praxis, but some states like Florida have their own tests), and then you get certified by your state.  There are alternate routes for professionals that already hold a Bachelor's degree in another area (ex. history) to become certified by taking classes and being in a mentorship program.

  3. If you want the literal "how," In most states they get at least a bachelor's degree and a teachers credential. Some states have schools that offer bachelor's degree in education. California, where I live, mostly offers degrees in education at a post-baccalaureate level. Most schools require some experience with children in a classroom setting before they will admit a student to an education program.
