How do i secure my wireless?

I bought a new del laptop yesterday and a belkin router for wireless internet. I've got the internet all set up but it says that mine is unsecured. Other networks in the area all say "security enabled network". I've asked friends and they say when they first put the router in it came up telling them to change the passy etc? What i need to know is EXACTLY where to go and EXACTLY what to do because i'm very stupid lol! We've tried lots of things but just have no clue how to do it :S Please if anyone has had the same problem and has worked it out - could you tell me how to do it? or just anyone who is brainy and knows how too. :) thankyouuuu

Read the instructions that came with the router.

Use WPA security.  Define a passcode for WPA. Make up a password for the router itself.  Stop broadcasting SSID.

And you're not stupid, you're just lazy.  Take it on yourself to figure this out.  You will feel much better than if I tell you how.

Okay.  First off, open up your web browser (Firefox, IE, Safari) on the computer DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER.  This will not work from your laptop.  Next you need to go to your router's ip address by typing it in in the address bar.  If you don't know the IP, try going to http://compnetworking.about.com/od/worki... to find it.  After that, you must set a password on the router.  The router's user manual should help you with that, as all routers' software are different.  Good luck!

its basically referred to "turning on encryption"

either you use an install disk or do it manually through the web browser interface to get into the router control panel

Go into wireless security > encryption > choose type of encryption

( wep 64 is easiest)

you generate a code by passphrase

hit ok or store or whatever to save

The code generated by the passphrase code generator is what you enter into windows when you log on to your encrypted wireless network

You do it twice

it would of helped if you would of told us the brand of your router as each brand has somewhat different control panel log on info

go to your routers ip address, if you have not set up a password to gain access to the routers ip enter 'admin' and leave the user name, if it dosent work leave them blank and just press ok

This is for a linksys but your might be similar

Click-on the Wireless tab and then click on Wireless Security

enter the followings

Security Mode----------WPA2 Personal

WPA Alogorithms-----AES

WPA Shared Key------enter a 10 digit number and note it well

Here is a generic link from Belkin to secure your router

You need to login in to your router by typing

192.168.2.1

or if that doesn't work

192.168.1.1

1)You then need  login and to put in a password, if you haven't changed it AFAIK this defaults to a blank password so click "submit" without anything else should log you in.

Look down the side for a Wireless tab

2)The “Wireless” tab lets you make changes to the wireless network settings. From this tab you can make changes to the wireless network name or Service Set Identifier (SSID), operating channel, encryption security settings etc. Click this tab

3)Select Security tab and it will go to the “Security” page and select “WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)” from the “Security Mode” drop-down menu

4) For “Authentication”, select “WPA-PSK”, “WPA2-PSK”, or “WPA-PSK+ WPA2-PSK”. This setting will have to be identical on the wireless clients that you set up. “WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK” mode will allow the Modem Router to support clients running either WPA or WPA2 security.

5) For “Encryption Technique”, select “TKIP”, “AES”, or “TKIP+AES”. This setting will have to be identical on the wireless clients that you set up.

6) Enter your pre-shared key (PSK). This can be from eight to 63 characters and can be letters, numbers, or symbols. This same key must be used on all of the wireless clients that you set up.

For example, your PSK might be something like: “Smith family network key”. Click “Apply Changes” to finish. You must now set all wireless clients to match these settings.

log out of the router. If you were probably connected to the router you may be disconnected now due to the security settings. You now need to enable your dell with the same security settings for it to connect

For your dell laptop if you have set up encryption correctly on the router with luck it may come up with a dialog box asking for a network key - enter your preshared key and your network should be encrypted otherwise Refer to the documentation of your dell wireless network adapter for information on making this change

.....to make it secure you need to put a password on your network......click control panel then network then click wireless connection router then look for putting the password....
