How do japanese clans work?

I've been trying to research japanese clans - or Uji - for a while now, but I haven't found out much. I'd like to know if everyone in Japan belonged to a clan, and how they were managed, if people of different clans could marry, where they lived, if there were different ranks within a clan, etcetera.

Clan! Wow, are you talking about 18th century? or are you talkin about cool Ninja manga or Samurai anime? or just kidding?

Sorry, I'm not good enough to tell what is your real intention.

In reality, at least you may mix up Japan with Chinna or Korea. Japanese can marrige everybody even have same name, exception is only not in the third degree.

Traditionaly, even that exception is not and it's a big different from China and Korea.
