  1. they have 2 engines or power sources usually a gas and an electric one.

the electric one operates at low speeds and the gas one takes over when needed.

  2. The web site, How Stuff Works, can explain it better that I can:

    .

  3. hybrids work by having an engine and a motor. the engine is powered by gasoline, and the motor is powered by electricity. these hybrids do not need to be plugged in, because the engine generates electricity for the batteries to power the motor. however, in the popular prius, they use regenerative braking to recharge the battery. this happens when you are braking or rolling to a stop. the wheels are connected to the motor, and when the motor isnt using electicity (when you are rolling to a stop) it acts as a generator, using the motor  to power the batteries. this will help the car go for longer. the prius gets roughly 60 MPG. although, with the great part of the mileage, there is a serious downfall in the performance. the cars only have about 70 horsepower, along with a 13 horsepower motor (in the prius' case). so the 0-60 times are above 10 seconds.
