How do the continents float?

rocks are denser than water? how do they float? is that why atlantis is gone??

    The continents aren't floating .. They're resting on rock underneath .. If you can find a way to swim underneath the continents, be my guest, but make sure you let people know! You'd be famous ..

  3. lawl. The continents that we are familiar with are on top of continental shelves which move around slightly.

  5. Continents do, in fact, float on the underlying mantle.  The reason that they float is that they are less dense than the mantle material.  This is the same reason that wood floats on water.
