It is rather simple and most people do not follow the basics.  Change the default username to something that is crazy to use as a name ie..  poppymom or something along those lines.  Use and wild password ie...  883urhbb4nbbs8 as an example.  Then close all ports and open only ports that are needed.  ports 135 - 139 are used in windows environments and should be used only in a trusted zone.  If possible only allow certain IP address's access to those ports.

in your address bar type your ip address for your router, that will (usually) take you to a user name and password screen, you will need to ask the provider of your router what the default password and user name is, once you have that info and you have typed in the info you can then access a screen with all the security options for your router, you will then be able to change the settings to your liking.
