How do websites make money?

Can anyone tell me how website owners make money. Does he gets paid for every visitor that hits their website .If yes who pays them and why?

Or it's just adds and services that make money for them.If yes, how do websites like yahoomail, yahooanswers and googlesearch and others without adds and products make such a lot of money.

    www.google.com/adsense and then put the ads on their sites.Whn some one clicnks on the ads,google pays them.

  3. Say you have a website. Google, Yahoo etc. have web crawlers. They find the "tags" to your site. Tags are descriptive words you use to describe what your site sells. They will contact you about adding your website to their server. Then each time someone clicks on your site, you have to pay a set, pre-agreed amount. It might be .50 cents a hit. So regardless of whether or not you sell anything to that customer, Google, or whoever still gets paid. That's a lot of bucks!

  4. I think advertisers pay them. The more hits a site gets, the more the advertiser is likely to pay...
