How do you clean a duvet?

How do you clean a duvet (not the cover, but the actual duvet)? I thought about throwing it in the washing machine, but I think it would ruin it. Any advice?

Take it to the dry cleaners.  Best results don`t do it your self.  Most Duvets can not be washed in washing machines. they are dry clean only.

The problem with dry cleaning it is that its not REALLY clean, it just LOOKS clean!

Is it double or single?

If it can fit into your washing machine then i say go for it! put it on a cool wash (30 or 40 degrees). If the washing machine is stuffed full with it then its best to dissolve your washing powder in hot water and then pour it into the drawer of the machine right after you turn it on. if possible, put it on a rinse first to get it wet, then wash it and give it another rinse to make sure its rinsed properly (only needed if the machine is very full)

I would recommend a biological washing powder if you don't have sensitive skin as it will wash away the sweat, dust, skin and mites better.

Wash it very early in the morning and when you are not in work/school (weekend maybe) to make sure its dry for the next night.

Tumble dry on low to keep it fluffy and kill any remaining mites.

While its washing/drying i would recommend cleaning your room really well, do anything and everything! Nothing better then getting into bed at night in a gleaming clean room after a hard days cleaning! wash your pillows too (same way and same way to dry).

I always wash my own! Mine all have synthetic filling, so i put enough warm water in my bath tub to cover them, add i cup of Napisan & 1 cup of liquid laundry detergent & mix it well. Then I put in the duvet/doona/quilt & swish it round making sure the whole thing is thoroughly soaked. I then leave it for several hours or overnight. I remove the plug when it seems clean & let the water drain off.after all excess water is gone you can either turn the cold water shower on it if you have one over the bath, or refill the tub with rinsing water, agitate till all soap residue is removed & leave to drain again. When most of the water is removed it should then fit in your washer if you have a big one to spin dry. Only do this in summer of course unless your washer is big enough to accomodate a duvet!
