  1. First you need to know what type of business you want... sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or C- or S-Corp.

With a sole proprietorship or partnership, you don't need to file any papers with the state (most states, anyhow), but you probably need to file a Fictitious Business Name or DBA statement with your county.  For a partnership you should have a written partnership agreement.

With an LLC or corporation, you need to register it with the Secretary of State for your state (sometimes another agency within the state) and file the appropriate papers and pay the fees.

After you've done that, then you need to get a business license from the city or county where your business is located.  For a startup, the cost is usually under $100, and renewals may be based on your gross receipts or number of employees after the first year.

  2. Most states, and cities, have web sites telling you how to get a business license in your area. Here is a link to one in Anchorage, AK. where I used to live.

  3. Go to the city hall where your business is based and apply, the cost will most likely be under $100. Next go to a bank of your choice and open a business checking account.
