Question:

How do you play Warhammer 40k?

Right now I don't have enough money for the rule book, and quite frankly, I don't want to waste money on the rule book, if I'll end up not liking the game. So does anyone know of a website I could go to to learn the rules of Warhammer 40k? Maybe even a adobe file, or something of that nature would also be fine.

  1. You're not going to get a copy of the rules without paying, and that's what I hated about this game.  I spent so much money on it trying to build my army, and then I lost interest.  I didn't even get to battle with them.

  2. www.games-workshop.com.

They have a tight control over information on the web, so as to rules, you won't get it for free.  You won't even get half of the rules and not even a satisfying taste of the game.  They have general summary sheets on the games-workshop for 40k.

I would suggest to go to game store or game group and watch a game or two and talk to the players to see if you might like the game or what army will best to suite your playing style.  They might let you join a game if they are nice enough.

If you want to go cheap (as 40k goes) buy Battle for Macragge or something like that ($60).  This is the second "cheapest" way of getting into Warhammer or trying it (I played with other peoples army for about 3 weekends before I decided on the army).  But you need more $$$ to be competitive or to get the full flavor of 40k because you're looking at 1000-1850 points games depending on the group or event you are participation in.

You must realize, 40k isn't just a game you can pull out, open up the cover and play.

  3. Depending on where you live, I would recommend going to an official Games Workshop store (usually at malls).

They have prepainted armies ready to teach people how to play, and the staff there is usally quite friendly to newbies.

Play a demo game or 2, and then you can see for yourself if you want to invest the $$$ in it.

Here's a list of their stores in the US:

  4. If you really want to see if you would like 40K try finding a club or store that plays the games- go and watch or even play a game there. There are many aspects to the hobby beyond just playing such as modeling/painting and building an army, and you might find out you really like one of the different army/races in the game. If there is no store/club around where you live consider buying the 40K starter box set- it is around $45- you get the rules, two starter armies, dice, and soem terrain. If you have a friend, split the cost and each of you take an army. Here is a link to the starter set:
