How do you thin buttercream??

I am taking a stab at cake decorating, I have seen some videos and I think I might be able to do it. I keep reading that you must thin the buttercream for some of the decorating. My stupid question is, you thin it with what?

  1. Hi, you can add a few drops of milk or some even use water. If it is too thin and you want the buttercream thicker, just sieve in a few teaspoon of icing sugar.  Good luck !  


  2. It sorta depends on what you plan to do with it. Water would be ok if you just need to ice a cake all over. Glycerin is better for stringwork. Simple syrup or corn syrup is better than plain water.
