  1. Great Question!  It is always better to have a single 2GB stick than 2, one GB stick.  This is because if you at a later time want more RAM, you will not have to throw away any of your sticks.  If you look anywhere, there is a sea of people who have upgraded their RAM and because they did not take that into consideration will not be able to use at least one stick and the money for that is lost.

If at some day you will want to have 4GB RAM, if you up front use a 2GB stick, you would just have to purchase another 2GB stick.  However if you have 2-1 GB sticks, you will not be able to use any of the 2 sticks.  That money is gone.  You will instead have to purchase 2-2GB sticks as if you had no RAM to begin with and then have to deal with all the others in trying to get rid of those 2-1 GB sticks of RAM.

If you want RAM in 1GB sticks, it is best to get them off ebay or in the after market.  You can get them for far less than what manufacturers charge you for and generally under cost.

RAM is a Profit margin area for manufacturers.  As a rule, if a manufacturer cannot put in a 2GB stick to max out one slot, I tell them to ship it with out any RAM at all.  And then get the RAM I want.   For some reason, Apple is insane regarding their RAM with huge profit margins.  I do the same thing there.  Manufacturers know what they are doing and taking advantage of consumer ignorance

  2. It really doesn't matter, I would recommend you get the 2 1 gigs because so you don't have to mix and match.
