  2. Christopher, as stated, sort the clothes, all whites, all colors, all heavy stuff like jeans and cargo type stuff.

Look at the clothing and see if it has any stains. If it does spray or squirt some stain pre-treat, such as "Shout" or "Spray and Wash" or just a dab of laundry soap on the stain, rub it a bit and throw it in with the rest of the load.

Do Not wash the heavy stuff with the lighter weight stuff. The heavier stuff rubs and pulls on the lighter stuff in the washer and dryer which wears the lighter stuff out sooner and sometimes even tears, pulls off buttons and pulls out seams. Pretty important.

You really can wash everything on cold/cold cycle. Colors should be washed on cold and you can put a little color-safe bleach in the cycle to perk up the color and help with any stains.

Don't ever use regular bleach on anything but whites.

You can wash your whites on hot but you don't have to. Also you don't need to use bleach every time you wash whites because it is caustic and that breaks down the fabric, making it wear out faster.

On these newer machines, a lot of them are energy efficient and don't use as much water. You have to use less soap, bleach and other additives because too much is hard on the washer and doesn't rinse out of the clothes completely. So look around for a sticker or label on the washer (or ask your parent) to see if it is "HE" "High Efficiency". If it is HE, look at the directions on your soap and use the amount it tells you to for HE. If it doesn't specify, use half the normal amount stated. Some laundry detergent is made specially for HE washers.

For the Dryer, Regular or Cotton cycle for pants, Permanent press for the shirts and things. Most are automatic, you might put the dial somewhere close to 'more dry' if you have that feature. They are all different.

Good job by the way. All my kids do their own clothes from about the age of 9 or so and for the most part they've done a good job. They are independent and didn't need to ask how to do it when they moved away!

  3. your awesome that really great that you want to start helping. first devide your whites from your darks, throw a load in and there is usually a regular setting, throw some tide or what ever detergent brand your family uses about a caps worth will do. then just start her up! as far as drying goes just throw them in an start the cycle!

  4. The advice I told a friend yesterday before he left for WVU:

    Read the tags.

  5. I generally split dark and light clothes and wash them separately at the "warm" setting. Towels and linens I wash at hot. I turn pants and shirts inside out. Check the care labels of your clothes to make sure they can be washed warm, but most can. The label will also tell you if you can use a drier or if you need to hang the clothes on a line.

If you have new clothes, I usually wash them in the bath tub by hand first to see if they bleed color.

But why don't you do it together with your parents a couple of times, to see how they do it?
