How does Drano work?

Question

I'm using Drano Max Gel to remove a stubborn clog in my shower, and noticed that the gel moved down the drain pretty quickly.

How does Drano work? Do the chemicals simply displace all the water in the fixtures P-trap and eat away at whatever's there? How can this be safe for pipes?

I had a party this weekend, and some idiot threw up in my bathroom sink. He cleaned up the worst, but the drain got clogged. I got a bottle of drano, poured it in there, and after 10 minutes it was fine.

From what I have heard, there are microscopical aluminum particles in drano. It supposedly reacts when put in a pipe, and starts bouncing around, literary cutting everything up into tiny pieces.

Not sure if this is true or not. I know it bubbled and fizzled a lot when I poured it in. It brought up all these pieces of solid vomit that just liquified in front of me. Pretty neat.

lt doesnt ! lol, l never had luck with Drano. Go to a plumbing supply store and buy '' Easyflow '' drain cleaner....strong stuff !! Read and follow directions to the letter. Cost $10. lt smokes when you use it , use gloves, eye protection and cover as directed. Good luck
