One can mix different ideas together and take a fresh look at early influences, old alternative movements and history.  It is not necessary to choose one type of literature or poetry.  

However, some like to engage in historical revisionism--the best way to approach history is to understand it from the viewpoints of both sides involved, get a clear picture of events, understand the timeline, the motivations and see it in the time frame it occurred.  This requires a good understanding of the background events, their repercussions and influence on future events.  You have to see the humanity in people.  Then after all that, you can look at it in terms of modern values and approaches, determine the long-term effects and take a post-modern view on it.
