  1. If you are low income and have circumstances such as special needs, minors living in the home, elderly.....then they can offer help depending on each individual case.  They have work programs, food stamps, daycare help (they pay a percentage for working parents or fulltime students that are parents), medical card to help with medical costs (easier to get for minors than for the adults)......You have to fill out an application and provide proof of income and proof that you are a US citizen and information about your bills and where you live so they can determine if you qualify or not.  Some think that it is a program for people to just be lazy on but in all reality it isn't, the areas all around me make you look for jobs and go to job programs atleast once a month unless a medical reason prevents that.  Also there are people that work that still don't make enough to pay all bills and take care of their kids.  My brotherinlaw has a job working 40-50 hrs a week and my sister tries to find a job (but then she can't make enough to even cover daycare) so they get a little bit of help with $100 in foodstamps a month and a medical card for their two kids.

  2. I don't know, I have been turned down for everything. I guess its because I have a JOB.

  3. It doesn't....I don't use it.

  4. Welfare allows some families to eat when they would otherwise go hungry.

Welfare gives some families shelter, when they would otherwise be homeless

Welfare gives some single parents child support, so they can have electricity and other bare necessities.

It has good intentions, but more often than not it is abused. My brother's family is on Medicaid..he got a second job, but then was not eligible for Medicaid. So he quit his second job. This **** happens all the time.

  5. It doesn't.  I'm single and pregnant, and I work 40+ hours to make ends meet.

It's my baby, and I pay for it. It's tiresome for me to continue helping out other people who cannot or will not work to support their own children.

Unfortunately, I know many people who continue having children they can't afford because they know there is a public safety net.....welfare/wic/food stamps/medicaid, etc.  I also know women who sell their food stamps/welfare for cash to buy smokes and drugs.

  6. it will depend on your state and your situation.

Welfare is a blessing to those who need it and a curse to those who abuse it.

  7. 'Welfare' has a broad definition. To begin there's different services for people that need a better well fare. It all fall under Health and Human Services or Social Services.

First, there's cash aid and food stamps: These two are based on income if any. Most people don't have income that's why they receive money. The money that they receive is different for every family... it depends on family size. Within the first 5 days of the month, people get their cash aid. The county will give them a EBT card which is like a debit card. They can use that card to withdraw the money from their bank account or make purchases at the store.

The food stamps are also places in the card. People don't actually get cash, the stamps are only used for food.

There's also Cal works (in CA) that teaches people job/interview skills.

When in Calworks and receiving cash aid many people are required to do something productive for a minimum of 32 hours, if not, their cash aid is jeopardized. If they work/volunteer/attend school for a minimum of 32 Employment services approves free daycare for the person receiving cash aid.

Lastly, mom/father is allowed 60 months (5 years) of cash aid after that they are cut off, however, children that are under 18 continue to receive cash aid.

Hope this answers your question. I worked with a population that recieves these services...

EDIT: There's also free or a share of cost for health benefits (Medical, Medicaid). People qualify depending on income...

There's also services for elderly people, the county and actually provide a caretaker for an elder person if the family has no one to care for them.

    There's more... child/adult protective services

  8. They do not give enough to live off of! I have never needed it, but work with families in desperate need of assistance. They can barely make ends meet, and often dont. And they consistantly are trying for work. Most families who are on it really do just use it temporarily, contrary to popular belief.

In my spare time I help run a community organization that assists families because of wrongful termination or to find new work. I am the staff attorney and part of my job is to help find people this type of assistance. It can be difficult as the process takes quite long.
