How does a convertible top work ?

G.M.91 Pontiac Sunbird the motor makes a clicking noise when switch is pushed.Is it electric that uses fluid also?

on my top there is a 2 latches up top when u sit in your car. those 2 latches unlock the top. then press the button. but its good to oil the hinges makes it easier for the motor.

YES electric and fluid,, the clicking you hear are the relays that start the pump motor for the top , removing the back seat and back rest will let you get access to it or going into the trunk , do you hear a motor running at all or just the clicking , if just clicking  it may be a bad pump motor  if the motor runs its either low on fluid or a bad cyclinder  or hose in any case a trip to a junk yard is cheaper than a new part or parts
