How does a transformer work?

hey. so i have to write a short essay about how a transformer works, but i have no idea. obviously i'm not asking you to write my essay for me, but perhaps a little insight would help!

Wikipedia may not be the most accurate all the time but in this case I'm sure it's close enough.

What does a coil of wire look like to DC?

Depending on how it is make it could be a short, a wire wound resistor or a heating element.
