How does betting work?

I mean on odds such as 4/1. How do they know you previously bet?

  4. Odds simply means that someone is favored to win.

    It works like this....we'll use football as an example.

    Let's say the Cowboys are playing the Ravens and the Cowboys are a 4 to 1 favorite.  (This only happens if there is no point spread, but that's a different question.)

    So since the Cowboys are favored 4 to 1 if I place a bet on the Ravens for $100 dollars and the Ravens win my bet would be payed off at 4 to 1.  Therefore I win $400 dollars on a $100 dollar bet, because I bet on the longshot.  I walk away with $500.

    On the other hand lets say I bet on the Cowboys who are favored to win.  I bet $100 dollars, and they win, but I'm only receiving one dollar for every four dollars that I bet therefore I win $25 dollars for a bet of $100.  I walk away with $125.

    That's pretty much how it works.  You usually only see this type of handicapping in horse racing.  In team sports it is usually handicapped by the point spread system.
