Outside investment is how companies get money to start or grow their business.

Companies make things that people buy, thereby profiting the company and those that invested in the company allowing for even further investments.

And the wheel goes round and round.

Investment allows businesses to hire more people and buy more equipment and services (from other businesses) thereby increasing total employment.  People with jobs can then buy more goods and services furthering such growth.
