Question:

How fast does a cavity develop

I found out I had a hole in one of my molars in the middle of July. I didn't worry too much about it because I thought I just had deep grooves in my molar. Then today I found out the hole looked a bit deeper and it turned into a blackish-brownish color, now I am sure it is a cavity.

So here are my questions...

- What is the average for a minor cavity to develop/grow?

- How long will it take for a minor cavity to turn into a serious cavity that have pain and have reached into the dentin of the tooth?

- I can't go to a dentist for a appointment until Oct. 13 for a deep cleaning/checkup. Is that too long to wait for them to take a look at my cavity and to fix it?

  1. It takes a while for a cavity to form.  The best way to reduce your chances of getting a cavity is to brush twice a day, floss everyday and try to stay away from sweets.  My dentist told me just recently after filling 5 cavities, that if you are going to eat sweets, its best to eat them all at once instead of eating them all throughout the whole day.
