  1. Madrid is a big city, 3 million people more or less and 6 million if you take 15 kilometres around. Weather is quite hot in summer (40 ºC). The best to do in Madrid for tourism is visiting Museums (Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen), monuments (Palacio Real), parks (Retiro park, not as famous as Central Park in NY, but quite big too) and so otther places (Zoo, Warner Theme Park, Madrid Theme Park at Casa de Campo, Santiago Bernabeu Stadium)... To move best in Madrid you better use the subway, is one of the best subway systems in Europe.

    Surely you will like.

  2. Hot, by CT. standards.  but a bit drier.  Everything is so much OLDER than in the US.  You know, even in CT, the oldest buildings are no more than 300 years old.  The Plaza Mayor is almost 400, the Palacio Real, 1700, so, about 300, buildings, palaces, and castles, churches that date back, some of them, as much as 1500 years.  Even some Roman structures that are 2000 years old!  The Gran Vía in Madrid was mostly built around 200 - 250 years ago, but so much more gracious than anything that old, here!

You'll probably be taken to all the big tourist spots.  You don't need to know much about them.  You will have tons of time to see everything.

You need to let go of a lot of your cultural mindsets...If you go to a bullfight, try not to see it as a cruel, nasty way to torture an innocent animal, but as a test of manhood, the pageantry, the basis of flamenco, all the things that the Spanish see when they go.  Be sure to check out the bullring, as well.  It looks GORGEOUS!  (I didn't even have time to pass by it!)

Also, let go of your food mindsets.  Understand that they eat a lot of things you don't see a lot of in American cooking.  Pulpo a la Gallega, for instance, a marinated octopus, is WONDERFUL!  but most Americans would turn their noses up at it.  Seafood is plentiful and there's huge variety. Try anything!  (cause it all tastes good!)

Really don't know what else you need to know.
