  1. I assume that you mean how can one separate the gases in the air into their individual molecular components.  One way to do it is by cryogenic distillation.  That is, cool the air until all of the gases become liquid.  Then allow the temperature to rise, and each gas will boil off at its own temperature of vaporization.


  2. gases have weights relative to one another.....like mercury vapor is much heavier than the surrounding atmosphere so the gas will be found lower, like at floor or ground level.  There are complicated techniques for seperating specific gas components like the Klejdal (sp?) method for nitrogen testing.....
