You will probably get as many differing opinions as you get answers.  The bottom line is that it very much depends on where you work in Canada, and who you work for.  

I have been very fortunate throughout my working life as I have always had excellent working conditions, a very fair salary, good benefits, decent bosses and supervisors, etc.   My work hours have usually been from 8:30 to 4:30 with an hour off for lunch and a coffee break morning and afternoon.  I have had at least four weeks vacation (more - 6 to 8 weeks - in the last 15 years) for all of my woking life.  Occasionally I have to do some work on weekends, or travel or be away from home on weekends, but nothing major, and when I was required to do that, I usually had "time off in lieu".  Many Canadian employees are protected by unions.

If you work in some sectors you will not have such benefits.  Many jobs do not have good vacation packages, nor good benefits - particularly unskilled labor jobs.  It will depend on the company you work for and the nature of the work.  Generally, the more professional the job, the better the working conditions.  The more in demand your skills are, most likely the better the conditions.

Yes, we pay higher taxes in Canada than in the US for sure, but our taxes here buy us a lot more - specifically health care.  I have no complaints about our level of taxation as I have had reason to be very involved with our health care system in recent years, and I know first hand what a blessing it is and how little we really pay as individuals for what we have.

Overall, I think Canada is a very good place to live and work.

It depends on your perspective.

An American would probably find working life in Canada to be a bit laid-back in comparison to the U.S. An American expat living here once put it like this: In the U.S., the norm was to work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with half an hour for lunch, and to come in to the office for a couple of hours on the weekend. In Canada, the norm is to work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with one hour for lunch, and hardly anyone comes in on the weekend.

Someone from Europe would probably find Canadian working life a bit more intense. There is less job security here than there is in western Europe, average working hours are a bit longer, and holidays/annual leave are less generous. Many Canadians only get 2-3 weeks annual leave, compared to 4-5 weeks in western Europe, as well as in Australia and New Zealand.
