You are more likely to be granted citizenship if you are from a country in which you have been persecuted.  If you claim political asylum, you also may have a good chance.

Green card is only for working in USA.  You need permanent resident status.  First you need an approving visa.  Look over the different types of visas on Travel.state.gov and types of petitions on Uscis.gov.  You will need a petition application and fee, a sponsor, but most of all an acceptable immigrant status.  You need to fulfill those requirements before your petition can be approved.  And the US consulate will want to verify all kinds of documents and your background with you before you continue with the process.
