Break outs of herpes on the skin usually last a few days, maybe a week. The virus however stays for life.

When I read your question it seems to me you are not asking how long it remains in your body but how long the virus can live outside the body, if so, this virus can live a lot longer than other viruses outside the body, so long as it is kept moist.  

Studies have shown it to remain active on items such as physicians tools for longer than 8 hours.  Even when swabbed with alcohol only 78% of the virus cells present were killed.  This makes Herpes a lot more viable than the HIV virus which survives only about 20 minutes outside a host.
