  1. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos060.htm

Everything you need to know from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    (college professor)

  2. The short answer is, "not enough." I hardly ever say this, because having a job you love is more important than money, but...

My sister was a social worker. She had a masters degree (MSW.) I had a GED. Yes, that's right, I did not even graduate from high school while she went to college for 6+ years. I was a restaurant/hotel manager, and earned more than she did every year from 1988 to 2004, when she left the field. It wasn't even close. And she had "good" social work jobs. At one point, she was director of an entire non-profit agency, in addition to doing therapy.

People with a masters degree in Chemistry start at $75,000. People with a masters degree in social work start at about $20,000. My sister used to literally call me crying, "Why didn't you try to talk me out of this?" (I did. She didn't remember.) The lowest paid jobs are those for the government, including CPS.

If you want a career where you will be helping people, become an RN, or a medical technician. Or go to school a little longer and be a (child?) psychologist or a doctor. The only person I know who makes an okay living in this field has a PhD. and is a college professor. And even she would make more money with degree in another field.
