How much does a tombstone cost?

I will be purchasing a stone for my mother who recently passed. At the same time, this should also include my dad's name. This stone must be flat to the ground due to the fact that all burials have the same marker in this area of the cemetary.

  1. Depending upon where you live, several hundreds for a small one (just lies there, sorta like a big brick) to thousands (the standard type, with a base and upright) to 10s of thousands.

Depends on whether you want pictures, inscriptions, etc.

My son's funeral cost more than $11,000, casket, tombstone, service...

  2. I've got a feeling the term "tombstone" might indicate the asker to this question is in the USofA, but just in case he isn't, I'll add my thoughts to the situation in England.

There are all kinds of rules which dictate how big a stone can be and what material it can be made from.  Individual churches and cemetaries charge a set fee to have the right to erect a gravestone, which is in the region of £150 (in addition to any fees for the grave or burial itself), which among other things is supposed to cover the cost of grass-cutting equipment etc.  A stonemason should include this price in his fee when he works out the cost and whether the cemetary will allow the said memorial to be erected before any actual work begins.  A basic gravestone and inscription would be somewhere in the region of £700-£1000, depending on the design and material used plus the cemetary fee.

  3. They seem to start at around $1000 for a single headstone and go up from there. The color, size, material, design, and lettering all affect the price.
