Long or short board?

Long boards can run in the 5-6 hundreds (or more depending on the shaper and the size of the board)

Short boards can run in the 2-3 hundreds... again, depending on the shaper and size)

You can sometimes pick up used boards for under $100, and thrift-stores in Beach areas are a good place to check.  However you really need to check the board out thoroughly before buying, since these often have many dings and could have subtle cracks.  

The best way to go is to have a board custom shaped for the type of surfing you do and for the typical surf conditions at the beaches you like best.  Check with your local surfing buddies and surf community to find a good shaper.  However, this could run several hundred dollars, up to over a grand.

surf boards are great fun, i own a animal and got it for £800 at an animal store. they have loads of different boards for around this price.
