How much money would someone need...?

Lets say you had a friend that was going to sail around the world and it was going to take 8-9 months. Your friend has the boat, how much money do you think you need to do this? Just curious- odd question I'm sure.

Visa,  They say it's every where you want to be.  Then take $1000, just in case.

A $5000.00 security blanket would be a good idea.  That would be enough money to cover food and entertainment in the ports you stop in and emergency plane fare home. Just in case.
