  1. It is a popular sport outside of school....many schools will not sponsor sports like figure skating and hockey because of the injuries that could occur and many of the major competitions are so expensive to pay for due to the fact that they are usually far away from the school.  It is very popular just not with schools involved.  And definitely not as popular as soccer or football or basketball....because it is a much more challenging sport that requires hours and hours everyday on the ice!!

  2. in Australia where i come from figure skating is hardly even recognized as a sport!!!

the most popular sports here is football, soccer rugby ... all those .... which i think is silly because when it comes to sponsorship for figure skating no one is willing to help us out.

i hope one day people from my country will realize the beauty and competition in this sport because is such a shame that its hardly recognized here .... people are missing out!!!! =]

  3. it SHOULD be popular, it's such a great sport!

  4. I'd say traditionally school endorsed sports like soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. are much more popular than skating.....BUT, if you're a skater, it's sort of what makes you unique and gives you your own identity around the soccer, basketball and volleyball players.  :)  The popularity of the sport ebbs and flows depending on the time of year and if it's an Olympic year or not.  It's like people forget about it any other time!  Usually during Olympic years, our Learn To Skate program is full, but enrollment quickly peters out.  Kids drop out to play soccer and all sorts of other stuff.  And ever notice that the rink is packed during the winter and people act like it's not open year-round?  Duh.  :)  Skating seemed to get a little popularity boost during the Kerrigan/Harding thing, which I guess is one way of turning a negative into a positive.  In my opinion, I think synchro is helping to give the sport a little more attention.  Some schools and colleges are associated with skating clubs, are developing their own programs and even my college had a basic skating skills class.  I don't think skating will ever be as common place as soccer and all that jazz, but I think it's kind of cooler to be part of your own thing than the same thing EVERYONE does.  :)

  5. Its not very popular because its extremely expensive and it takes alot of work to get up in the levels. Alot of people I know said they started out in skating when they were around five just to learn how to skate, but they didnt move up the levels. Not many people are figure skaters because you must be very young joining and you must have lots of money and you must be willing to waste continues hours at an arena. Figure skating takes passion. ^-^

  6. It is not AS popular as some sports like Basketball, Soccer, etc. It is, though, quite popular in America, Canada, Japan.

In my school there are 6 skaters including me.

  7. It's not as popular as soccer baseball volley ball ect , but it is ok.It's basically not very popular but in some other countries it may be way more popular.

  8. its not quite as popular at some schools as it is at others... i know of one school in my city that opend a figure skating academy so it poplular there but it really depends on the place

  9. its become quite popurlar in britain were ever you are from  because of a celebrity t.v. show calle dancing on ice were celebritys dance with well known ice skaters but there is not that many who skate in my school but i find it gd being one out of a few because we went to the ice rink for a  christmas trip and i could do all tricks and jums and there was people who couldn't even skate

there are a group of boys who are  what americans would call the jocks  good at sport s etc  and it felt good to show them up in a sport that they cannot do

  10. Figure skating has been gaining popularity, but it hasn't quite achived full recognition. Some universities have programs with many skaters while some have none. The USFSA also recently has a new high school program to promote skating and gain attention and knowledge to our awesome (!) sport.
