well when you sign up you pick a network. then you can view anyones profile in your network. (your network is your highschool) so if someone isnt in your network you ahve to request them.

well im not sure about facebook but on myspace i know that you can set it so that it will be like that ( only friends can veiw your friends,pictures, profile, etc.) and you can also make it so that anyone can see your page! and if you don't mind me saying, myspace is better!!!! get a myspace instead

Facebook is really safe. Much more safer than Myspace. Just be sure not to put anything on there that you don't want your employers or anyone else to see, because you really never know!

I was asking that same question to myself about three months ago before i got my own Facebook account. It is as safe as yo want it to be. For example you can customize your page so absolutely nobody can see it except your friends that you have added, or that have sent you a friend request and you have confirmed them. Therefore if you are worried that someone randomly can see your personal things. Don't be. Because all they can see is your profile picture and what your name is until you confirm that they are your friend (pending if they send you a friend request or not)

Like I said before. I was in the same position that you are a few months ago. I really enjoy facebook. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends and communicate.
